Мы стыдимся вещей, which не represent a real threat to survival, but at the same time experience the intensity of the emotion as if it depends on life.
Когда мы испытываем стыд, in our brain a cascade of biochemical reactions is triggered. Activity of the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain that is responsible for self-control and social behavior — decreases, and evolutionarily older structures take the upper hand. The amygdala — the center of fear — is activated, and the insula — the area associated with internal body sensations — sends signals that “something is wrong”.
Interestingly, the experience of shame activates the same areas of the brain as physical pain. This is not a metaphor — the brain really perceives social rejection as a physical threat. That is why shame is so hard to bear. It is not just unpleasant psychologically — it is physically painful. It is this mechanism that lies at the root of why people avoid situations that can cause shame, even if it contradicts their long-term interests.
Стыд зарождается in early childhood, long before the child begins to understand social norms. The first experiences of shame are often associated with the reaction of parents: when a parent turns away, criticizes, or expresses disappointment, the child learns to associate his behavior with the loss of love and approval. At this age, shame is not separated from the personality: the child does not think “I did something bad,” he feels “I am bad.” If this pattern is established, it becomes the basis for chronic shame in adulthood.
The development of shame depends heavily on how parents react to the child’s mistakes and failures. If they perceive them as an inevitable part of learning and maintain an emotional connection, the child learns to cope with shame and perceive his mistakes as temporary. If, however, they react with shame, mockery, or punishment, the child learns that his value depends on perfection, and any failure becomes a threat to his self-esteem.
Different cultures relate to shame differently. In some societies, shame is the main social regulator. In Japan, for example, the concept of “face” (men) is closely linked to the avoidance of shame. In traditional cultures, shame can be even more powerful tool of control than law. The famous phrase “burn with shame” reflects the intensity with which society can use this feeling to maintain order.
In Western culture, shame is often perceived as something that needs to be overcome. It is considered an obstacle to self-realization, and psychotherapy is often aimed at freeing from chronic shame. However, even in Western societies, shame remains a powerful tool of social control, especially in the age of social networks, where “public shame” has become a common phenomenon.
In the age of social networks, shame has gained new strength. Today, a mistake made publicly can remain on the internet forever and be spread millions of times. Public shame has become a tool of social control, and sometimes even bullying. People are afraid to express opinions that may be perceived negatively because the fear of “looking like a fool” now extends beyond the circle of acquaintances to the whole world.
On the other hand, social networks have created a space for “taking off shame”: communities where people share their failures and find support. Such exchange can reduce the intensity of shame, helping to realize that mistakes are a part of the common human experience. However, the balance between healthy overcoming of shame and its painful experience remains very fragile.
Work with shame begins with its awareness. Often we do not even notice when shame is controlling us: we avoid certain situations, do not express ourselves, refuse from opportunities. The first step is to learn to notice shame in the moment when it arises and recognize its signs: increased heartbeat, reddening, a desire to avert one’s gaze.
The second step is to separate shame from guilt and reality. Ask yourself: “Did I really do something bad, or am I just afraid of judgment?” Sometimes shame arises not because of a real offense, but because of the fear of possible reaction from others. In this case, it is important to shift the focus from external evaluation to internal values.
The third step is to share shame. One of the most effective ways to reduce shame is to talk about it. When we say aloud what we are ashamed of, we deprive it of its power. We see that others do not reject us, and this helps to break the illusion of isolation.
Contrary to the common belief, shame can be not only destructive but also positive. Healthy shame helps us remain socially adapted, respect the feelings of others, and learn from our mistakes. Without shame, we would not develop as individuals, because it is shame that prompts us to change when we realize that our behavior does not correspond to our values and the expectations of society.
Overcoming chronic shame is a path that requires time and patience. But it leads not to the disappearance of shame, but to the ability to be with it, not allowing it to define our lives. In this sense, shame, like many other emotions, is not an enemy but a teacher. And when we learn from it, it stops being our jailer.
The psychology of shame is the psychology of human vulnerability. It shows how deeply we depend on recognition from others, how much we need to be accepted. But it also shows how we can free ourselves from this dependence, learning to accept ourselves even in those moments when we are far from ideal. Shame is not a sentence. It is a challenge. And overcoming this challenge leads to true freedom.
