Such collections were called menageries. They were an integral part of royal courts and served as symbols of power and prestige. Live exotic animals were a rarity, and owning them highlighted the status of the ruler.

The most famous example is the royal menagerie in the Tower of London, which existed for several centuries. There, lions, bears, wolves, and other exotic animals were brought, which were gifts from foreign monarchs. Animals were kept in cramped cages, often in basements or towers. The conditions were terrible: little light, poor ventilation, lack of space. Visitors could get close to the cages, and often animals became victims of cruel amusements.

Menageries were not only in Europe. In the Islamic world, exotic animals were also kept at the courts of caliphs. In Baghdad and Cordoba there were zoos where lions, elephants, giraffes, and even white bears, which were brought from the north, lived. However, the conditions of keeping them were far from ideal.

18th–19th centuries: the birth of the modern zoo

A turning point came in the era of Enlightenment, when interest in science and education began to replace pure curiosity. In 1752, the Schönbrunn Zoo was opened in Vienna, which is considered the oldest continuously operating zoo in the world. It was created as an imperial menagerie, but some elements of a scientific approach were already applied at that time.

A real breakthrough occurred in 1793 when the first public zoo in the world was opened in Paris, on the territory of the Botanical Garden. It was created from the royal animal collection after the French Revolution and was intended for scientific research. Unlike private menageries, the Paris zoo was accessible to all citizens, making it the first mass educational center.

In 1828, a zoo was founded in London, which became the first scientific zoo in the world. It was created to study animals, not for entertainment. Only in 1847 did it open its doors to the general public. The London Zoo became a model for imitation, and zoos began to appear in other European capitals.

What did the first zoos look like: cells, bars, and crowds

The appearance of the first zoos was greatly different from modern ones. Animals were kept in small, cramped cages, resembling prison cells. Cages were made of metal bars, and visitors watched the animals through them. In some zoos, animals were kept in basements or in stone barns, where there was no light or fresh air.

Visitors could get close to the animals. For example, in the London Zoo, you could feed elephants by hand or pet a giraffe. This created a certain risk, but at that time there were no strict safety rules. Animals were used for the entertainment of the public, and often they became victims of cruel experiments.

The conditions of keeping were Spartan. Little concern was shown for the comfort of the animals, and many of them did not live to old age. For example, in the London Zoo, elephants often suffered from improper feeding and lack of space. However, these early zoos laid the foundation for future development, showing that animals can be not only curiosities but also objects of scientific study.

20th century: from cells to enclosures and conservation mission

In the 20th century, the concept of the zoo underwent significant changes. The transition from cramped cells to spacious enclosures, as close as possible to the natural habitat of animals, began. The pioneer in this was the German zoo trader Karl Hagenbeck, who in the early 20th century created an exhibition without bars — \"Island of Animals.\" He proposed to separate animals not by cells, but by water ravines, and to use natural barriers to make animals feel freer.

Today, the main tasks of zoos are the conservation of rare and endangered species, their reproduction, and scientific research. Modern zoos are not just places for entertainment, but important educational and conservation centers. They participate in international programs for breeding rare species, such as the Amur tiger, mountain gorilla, and black rhinoceros.

A revolution has taken place in the architecture of zoos. Today, enclosures imitate natural landscapes: savannas, jungles, mountains, deserts. Animals are kept in conditions as close as possible to their natural ones. This allows not only to improve their well-being but also to give visitors the opportunity to observe their behavior in a more realistic setting.

Today's zoos: eco-parks and conservation of nature

Modern zoos are increasingly called \"eco-parks.\" They are focused on sustainable development, environmental education, and the protection of biodiversity. Many zoos have given up keeping animals that cannot be saved in the wild and have focused on reintroduction programs — returning bred in captivity individuals to their natural habitat.

Visitors to modern zoos can not only see animals but also learn about the threats they face: climate change, poaching, deforestation. Zoos are becoming platforms for education, where people learn about the importance of preserving nature and how each of them can make a contribution.

Thus, the path from ancient menageries to modern zoos is a path from the demonstration of power to the awareness of responsibility for the preservation of living nature. Zoos have come a long way, and today they are not just places where you can see animals, but centers of science, education, and hope for the future.
